BARC Communications Capabilities

The Birmingham Amateur Radio Club maintains a radio room with an ICOM 761 and a trapped dipole for 10,15 and 20 meters, tunable to work 80 and 40 meters also, at the Hoover Community Education Center in Bluff Park.

BARC maintains a VHF and UHF FM station at the National Weather Service located at the Shelby County Airport. This equipment is capable of operation on 145 MHz, 220 MHz and 440 MHz. This capability, along with the linking possibilities of local amateur repeaters, provides the timely reports of severe weather that the Weather Service uses to issue warnings. Lives are sometimes saved by the job done by the Weather Service and the many volunteer amateurs in the Birmingham area who devote their time and energy. Most of those who participate are members of the Club.
